Belize LOVES The Chicago Cubs
Belize may be home to the biggest base of Cubs fans outside of the Windy City. It all started back in 1981, the year when Cubs games began being broadcast in the small Caribbean country. Not long after Belize gained its independence from Britain, a local TV station started, but what where they going to do for programming? As a creative solution, they found a way to pirate the WGN TV signal from Chicago. In began as one of the only two channels and broadcast around the clock this glimpse of Chicago including all the Cubs games.
In the winter of 1985, the Cubs sent outfielder Gary Matthews on a goodwill mission to Belize when the Cubs captured the pennant. The welcome he received was overwhelming. Some claims it was a larger turn out than for Queen Elizabeth’s visit the following year! That is the unexpected way the team from the central division, won the hearts of Central America. The relationship has continued to this day. Right now many Belizeans at home and inside the United States are cheering on the Cubs in their World Series win!!!
