Cayo District

Getting to know Western Belize

- The Cayo District…

Think of it as a TROPICAL PIONEEER-FRONT. If you might find yourself at ease in rolling hilltops surrounded by exotic hardwoods, the Cayo District is for you.  The lush green hills of Cayo are literally surrounded by archeological sites as well as recent oil and gold finds. Cayo is a place where you might meet archeology doctorates, field engineers, and an organic teak tree farmer.

San Ignacio is 72 miles west of Belize City and 22 miles from Belmopan on the Western Highway.  With 20,000 residents the San Ignacio area is the second largest community in Belize. San Ignacio and her once-separate sister city St. Elena (on the opposite side of the Macal River) are now considered one community. In San Ignacio, just 9 miles from the border with Guatemala, you can experience of convergence of centuries and cultures.

Bring your sense of adventure for Cayo. Upon their first visit many newcomers liken it to the “wild west”. The area also draws the eco-friendly tourists who want to explore caves, horseback ride, climb Mayan ruins, and cool off in one of the many waterfalls.

Location

Positioned on the north edge of Santa Familia village, it is an ideal location. Maya Spring Estates is just 7 miles by road to either San Ignacio or Spanish Lookout.

San Ignacio is the major town in the area with many shops, hotels, restaurants, banks, and is a hub for eco-tourism in Belize.

Spanish Lookout is a Mennonite community supplying much of the country with dairy, poultry, and more importantly building and farming materials.
